Violin Lessons For Beginners Through Advanced Musicians
We help kids, adults, beginners and advanced violinists at DeGamba School of Music and Art.
Our beginner violin techniques focus on establishing a solid technical and musical foundation. We’ll typically start with posture and learning to hold the violin and bow correctly. Basic bowing techniques, such as “detache” (smooth, separate bows for each note) and “staccato” (short, separated notes) give the student their introduction to actually playing the violin – it’s always an exciting moment. We’ll also jump right into left-hand techniques, including finger placement, simple scales, and building finger strength and agility on the fingerboard. This does not happen overnight! We send our young students home after each lesson with carefully considered and spelled-out practice drills that will reinforce the concepts learned in lessons.
As the student improves, they will work on vibrato and creating a warm, rich sound. We will also teach shifting, which allows players to move between positions on the fingerboard. They will also explore articulations like legato playing, spiccato (bouncing bow), and develop their overall musicianship with fluent note reading, music theory, and faster playing.
After a few years of practice, advanced violinists at our school start to work on harmonics, ricochet technique, double stops, and most importantly, playing more challenging and rewarding repertoire. We are constantly in the pursuit of better tone and vibrato, and we never lose sight of foundational technique along the way.

Violin Lesson Material Curated For You
Our teachers draw from Suzuki, popular violin methods, graded violin literature, and personal experience to create a curriculum that specifically benefits the student. We can also find skill level-appropriate arrangements of popular tunes, movie soundtracks, and other music that a student loves.
With young kids, our primary focus is developing the ear, foundational technique, and creating a love for music. This will motivate them to practice and improve. With adults, we often help them reach a specific goal – some want to sight read, some want to learn fiddling techniques, and some want to play in a country band.
