Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone and More

Our teaching staff is full of professional instructors who have played their instruments at a professional level, earned degrees in music, and taught countless kids, teens and adults. One of the most important things you get in private lessons is “modeling” – in your lesson, you will be able to hear a pro musician demonstrate a great vibrato on the flute right there in your lesson. Or your child will hear, first-hand, what a pro-level saxophone player can do. From demonstrations of clarinet technique to tenor sax licks, this in-person expertise does wonders for an aspiring musician.

Our students also have the opportunity to “double” on a different instrument. Many woodwind players, both classical and jazz, are multi-instrumentalists, and some students want to be able to play the flute, clarinet, sax, and baritone/tenor versions of their instruments.

What You Can Learn

Musical Fundamentals

All of our students learn how to read notes and play in time. These are fundamentals for musicians trying to play in a wind band or orchestra. Students identify time signatures, learn to read notes in both staffs, transpose into different keys, identify key signatures and accidentals, and more. We also teach music theory, improvisation, and musical interpretation. From making a sound on the instrument to labeling the form of a piece of music, we are here to help.

Instrument-Specific Technique

Flute, saxophone, clarinet, oboe, and other woodwind instruments all have their own technical challenges. From learning how to hold a saxophone to forming an embouchure on the clarinet, we cover all of the bases. Some fundamentals apply to every instrument – like breath support, for instance. But our students work with expert practitioners on their instrument, and improve rapidly as a result.

Prepare For Band Recitals, Competitions and Auditions

Many of our pre-college students bring band music to lessons. We are happy to help them practice, learn to count tricky passages, and provide tips for practicing at home. We can also help students prepare for all-state band auditions. You’ll need to play your scales fluently, learn your arpeggios, and be able to double-tongue and play with a beautiful legato technique. Even if you’re an adult playing your instrument for fun, we’ll create a specific lesson curriculum just for you.
